WNUW is Hosting College Radio Day

Now in its 13th year, College Radio Day arrives on 98.5 WNUW on October 6th at 12 a.m.

It is the one day out of the year for students to talk on radio about anything they desire for 24 hours and to have fun with it.

The concept was conceived by Rob Quicke, (General Manager of WPSC at William Paterson University). He founded the organization in December 2010 and the first College Radio Day was held on October 11, 2011. It happens in the first week of October.

College Radio Day harnesses the combined listenership of hundreds of thousands of college radio listeners throughout the world to celebrate the important contribution of college radio by uniting for one day.

During every hour, students get to talk about anything they want: sports, entertainment, news, or comedy. They can conduct interviews and play different genres of music, including hip-hop, rap, country, rock n’ roll, and even Christmas music.

College Radio Day brings people together to have their voices heard, to get more people involved, and just to have fun while doing it.

This year, the students have planned a taste testing hour, a spelling bee hour, telling stories, and playing music like Taylor Swift, Brittney Spears, The Beatles and so much more. They even play famous TV show theme songs, including those from Friends, ICarly, Hannah Montana, Full House, and The Muppets.

The students also help out with the Knights’ Pantry in the RAB building. They help by generating donations of food, clothes, and products for students who can’t afford the basic necessities.

Every year they also play kickball, their most famous tradition.

“At 1 a.m. in the Mullen parking lot, there are a few people who come out to play kickball and they film it on a remote broadcast.” said Alex Castells, a student.

According to fellow student Andrew Marshall, “Last year we played kickball in the parking lot around 1 to 2 in the morning, and all of the RA’s and everyone came out to play.”

During the 24-hour broadcast, some students sleep on lounge chairs, couches and the floor of the Mullen Communication Center. It’s a way for them to be fully involved on this special occasion.

Those who can’t join the broadcast can listen on 98.5 WNUW on October 6.
