Skating to Success: Alumnus Returns to Revitalize Hockey Program

Neumann Athletics is brimming with excitement as it welcomes back ice hockey alum, Michael Hedden, as head coach of the men’s varsity team.

Hedden is all set to lead the Neumann Knights through the 2023-2024 season as he takes the helm as the 7th head coach in the team’s 26-year history. His remarkable journey and deep connection within this community may inspire a new era of greatness on the ice.

“It’s great to be back on campus. Neumann played a huge role in my path to professional hockey, but I was very thankful to have this opportunity to come back and coach the program,” said Hedden.

Hedden, a 2009 graduate of Neumann University, previously held the position of assistant captain during his final year wearing the blue and gold for Neumann. It was a season that made history as they won the Division III National Title. Throughout his undergraduate years, he consistently earned ECAC West All-Conference team honors in all four seasons he played as a Knight.

He engraved his legacy in the record books as the all-time leader in goals with 96.

Among Neumann Knights in hockey history, he ranks second in games played with 108 appearances, holds the sixth position in all-time assists with 67, and secures the second spot on the career list with a total of 163 points.

There are tons of excitement throughout Neumann’s campus with the new rink that is planned and a new era of men’s hockey for the university.

“As a Neumann alum, he embodies the core values that define Neumann University, and his leadership style developed here truly stands out,” said Director of Neumann Athletics and Recreation Charles Sack.
