Out of love for her son comes a book for kids with autism

In many cases, autism is either misrepresented or not represented at all in media, so Neumann alumna Dominique Edwards set out to do something about it.

She wrote and published the children’s book I am Just as Smart as You (illustrations by Jhunny Moralde), which is intended to improve the self-esteem of children with autism.

In writing the book, Edwards was inspired by her 8-year-old son, who has autism. She had noticed a problem when it came to reading books to him.

Edwards felt that the children’s books about autism were not helpful because they were aimed at parents rather than children.

She therefore wrote a book which engages with children rather than parents.

A teacher helped Edwards read the first draft of the book and he even helped her find the illustrator. Edwards also received feedback from friends from high school.

Despite the positive reactions to the book so far, Edwards is not afraid of negative feedback.

“I am open to constructive criticism,” she said.

In addition, Edwards considered it important to illustrate a black individual in the book not just because she based it on her son, but also to represent neurodivergent individuals within the black community in which there is a greater stigma attached to these individuals.

”Black parents should not feel embarrassed to speak out about their children with disabilities,” said Edwards.

Additionally, Edwards said that schools must act, “Schools need to spread more awareness of those with disabilities or mental health issues. I believe courses need to be taken to bring awareness.”

In a world where ableism and bullying are rampant Edwards just wants parents “to get the help their children need and spread love.”
