“Oklahoma!” is Taking the Stage

Big melodies, lively movement, and timeless storytelling are headed to the Meager Theatre this spring as Oklahoma! arrives on campus. Audiences can expect a production brimming with energy, emotion, romance, and drama.

Widely regarded as a cornerstone of American musical theatre, the classic musical continues to captivate generations of audiences. First performed in 1943, Oklahoma! is often recognized as the first fully integrated musical, blending song, dance, and dialogue to drive the narrative rather than interrupt it.

For the cast, the production brings both creative excitement and technical challenges, particularly in shaping characters and mastering dialect work.

“Playing Laurey has been as fun as it has been challenging,” said Alana Acosta, who takes on the role of Laurey. “To truly channel her character and personality, I do have to step out of my comfort zone a little bit.”

Accents have proven to be a defining element of the rehearsal process, requiring performers to refine pronunciation, rhythm, and vocal delivery while remaining grounded in character.

“I am really excited for the audience to watch and be in a true southern experience,” said Brenna Vandergeest, who portrays Aunt Eller. “I think the blend of comedy and tragedy will absolutely captivate the audience.”

Character development has also encouraged creative interpretation. While preparing for his role as Will Parker, Jamel Barton found inspiration in an unexpected place.

“So far, it’s been pretty fun bringing the character ‘Will Parker’ to life,” Barton said. “While reading the script for the first time, I was thinking of what voice and personality I wanted Will to have.”

Even in the early stages of rehearsal, cast members point to the energy and commitment driving the production.

“Students should definitely come see Oklahoma! this spring,” Barton said. “Even though rehearsals have only just begun, it’s already been so enjoyable, and you can really see how much effort everyone is putting in to create an amazing performance.”

With its memorable score, dynamic choreography, and enduring story, Oklahoma! promises a theatrical experience that balances humor, romance, and drama. Performances will run March 19–21 at 7 p.m., with a final matinee on March 22 at 2 p.m.

Admission is free for Neumann students with a valid student ID, so don’t miss out on seeing Neumann’s rendition of this classic production.
