Editors Picks: Best of NeuPress 2024

At NeuPress, Neumann University’s student-run newspaper, creativity and passion shine through in every article. Over the past year, more than 100 articles have been published, showcasing a wide range of topics from sports to lifestyle.

As the fall semester winds down, we asked our editors to reflect on their favorite stories of the year.

Here are their top picks.

1. Danica Pedone – Editor-in-Chief

Favorite Article: Ink of Identity: Three Neumann University Athletes Share Stories Behind Their Tattoos

Danica, who took on the role of Editor-in-Chief this semester after serving as Sports Editor last spring, shares her love for an article that dives deep into the identity of Neumann University athletes.

  • “This was my favorite article to write because I talked to three different athletes about their tattoos and their meanings. I’ve always been interested in the athletes on campus who have tattoos and seeing them when they play because I always wonder what the tattoos actually represent to the person. Diving into a little piece of someone’s identity was really fun!”

2. Ryen Hawkey – News Editor

Favorite Article: If You Build It, Will It Close?

Ryen, currently the News Editor, previously served as the Lifestyle Editor in the spring. She chose a recent article that had many people talking on and off campus.

  • “It’s my favorite because I spent a lot of time working on it, researching, and interviewing different people. I also really like it because that day after we released the article, The Philadelphia Inquirer released a similar article, so we got the scoop first!”

3. Emily Ammon – Opinion Editor

Favorite Article: Is Dating Dead?

As the Opinion Editor this semester, I tackled the changing view of relationships with my article interviewing students and beloved staff.

  • “This was my favorite story article because there were so many layers to the topic. Also, being able to get to talk to different people about their opinions, ranging from different ages but all having a common opinion on how dating is in this day and age.”

4. Cole Betham – Sports Editor

Favorite Article: Finding Spirituality in Sports

Cole, who is the current Sports Editor, wrote on the importance of merging two of his passions in his favorite story.

  • “I don’t think this is my best story. I was still getting my feet under me when it came to writing. The way it’s worded annoys me when I read it over. Despite all that, I am really happy that I wrote this article. I’m so happy I was able to merge two of my favorite things, finding connections between faith and sport.”

5. Megan Foody – Lifestyle Editor

Favorite Article: A Book Has Never Killed a Classroom of People, Guns Do

Megan, the current Lifestyle Editor, previously served as the News Editor last spring. Her favorite article of the year is a powerful statement on the ongoing book bans in the U.S.

  • “This is my favorite because Book Bans are a topic I care deeply about. Whenever you are writing about something important and informing others, it makes the result more rewarding.”

These standout stories reflect not only the personal interests of our Editors but also the bright and diverse voices within the Neumann University community.

Whether exploring the meaning behind tattoos or the complexities of modern dating, each article represents the unique approach and creativity that makes NeuPress a valuable resource for students.
