Sisters Donate Land for New Aston Park

The Sisters of St. Francis sold a 43-acre parcel of land to Aston Township for a price of $1.9 million, slightly below market value, as their contribution to the creation of a new park in Aston, a project supporting green space.

The land once held a small convent, housing 4-5 sisters, but has been a natural green space since its demolishment.

“The sisters are grateful that the land will remain open green space and that Aston Township commits to keeping it undeveloped for the use of all residents,” said Sister Florence Hee.

Sr. Florence is a member of the leadership team of the Sisters of St. Francis and is also a member of the Board of Trustees at Neumann.

“We did not want to relinquish our land for further development, but rather, to be a space where residents could enjoy open space and fresh air,” said Sr. Florence.

According to Sr. Florence, about eight years ago there was a conversation between representatives of Natural Lands, a non-profit organization, and the congregation to learn how land can be protected as green space.

However, it wasn’t until 2021, that the interest of Aston Township looking to preserve green space increased, and officials engaged in further conversation with Natural Lands.

With the Township being able to solicit funds to purchase the land and Natural Lands assessing space and submitting grant proposals, a ribbon cutting ceremony is said to be held in the spring.

“This commitment to having green space in Aston Township is part of our legacy as Sisters of St. Francis,” said Sr. Florence.
