Winter break came and went. Everyone went home with their families and soaked in the holiday season.
With everyone away, keeping up with our sports teams may not have been as easy. A few of us may have entirely blocked out any kind of Neumann-related thoughts over the break.
To get you back in the loop, this is what Neumann athletics have been up to since we were gone. (December 15th – January 21st )
Men’s basketball
Record over break: 5-0 (5-1, counting an exhibition)
Despite starting off this stretch with a tough loss to Lehigh University in an exhibition, the team followed up with 5 straight wins against Atlantic East Conference opponents. Multiple of these games came down to the wire, being single digit wins. They ended strong with back-to-back double-digit wins, including a 28-point win against Centenary.
The team excelled as a unit, not being too dependent on anyone. Everyone got their share of putting the ball in the basket, with 4 of the 5 games having a different leading scorer. They consistently created points off turnovers and attacked the paint hard, helping them string together quite the win streak.T he team continues to show why they are positioned 2nd in their conference.
Women’s basketball
Record over break: 4-2
Before setting off for the Lehman Tournament, the team handled business against Eastern, in a 21-point win. They followed up with an even bigger win at the tournament, beating Lehman by 34. They finished with a 1-1 record in the Lehman tournament.
The team returned home to also start inter-conference play, going 2-1 and including a massive 24-point win against Marywood. Their one loss came from a 15-3 Immaculata team. Despite losing by 10, it remained close throughout most of the game, with there being 12 lead changes. This loss is certainly not one to hang your head on, as keeping it so close with such a good team is very promising.
Emily DuPont has stepped up and caught fire as of late, leading the team in scoring over the stretch, averaging 16.3 points per game. Aubrie Breisblatt has also been finding her groove, averaging 12.6 points per game.
Things are clicking at the right time for the knights, as they look to roll into the playoffs.
Men’s Ice Hockey
Record over break: 2-4
Over the break, the team had an uncharacterisitc stretch of losses. The team started off
8-1-2 and then lost 4 of their next 6.
They started off the new year going off and playing in the Oswego tournament, going 1-1 and picking up a decisive 5-2 win over Lebanon Valley College. Upon coming back home, they were faced with inter-conference play, winning one of four games.
Max Donohoe stood out, putting the puck in the net twice and assisting on 5 goals. Lucas Culhane is another name worth mentioning, scoring the most goals during break, with 3.
As the knights continue their season, let’s hope they get back to their normal selves and get back on winning track as the playoffs loom in the distance.
Women’s Ice Hockey
Record over break: 2-3
Although the season may not be going how we all may have wanted, this stretch was a step in the right direction for the team. 2 of the teams’ 4 wins on the season came over the winter holiday, as they swept a two-game series against Stevenson University.
In the first game against Stevenson, they scored the most goals they have in a game all season with 4. The following game, they didn’t let up a single score.
Charlotte Labre and Gia Santorello had quite the winter break. tallying up 2 goals each and with Labre recording an assist.
This was a successful stretch for the team, picking up wins and scoring goals. Hopefully this can help change the outlook of their season as it comes to a close.
So now that you’re all caught up, I hope you’re ready to root for our teams to finish strong.
