Neumann University currently has six students in the study abroad program. There are students placed in Spain, the Czech Republic, Italy, and England.
Ashley Butts, a junior, occupational therapy major, and lacrosse player, is currently in London, England attending St. Mary’s University.
She has graciously highlighted her experiences with study abroad thus far.
“I decided to study abroad because I have loved traveling since I was very young, and I wanted to challenge myself as well as explore more of the culture in different countries,” she explained.
Neumann’s study abroad program within the Center for Global Engagement allows an opportunity for students to “facilitate international experiences, intercultural learning, and critical reflection” according to Victor Betancourt, associate provost for global engagement. Ashley has already achieved this and much more through her experiences so far.
“From this experience, I hope to learn more about British culture by connecting with locals as well as when I travel to other places,” Ashley shared.
While learning more about the culture, noticing differences between the U.S. and England are inevitable.
In terms of courses and academic structure, Ashley said, “Every class has a lecture and a seminar or practical. There are also no assignments, only a midterm and a final which can consist of a paper, exam, presentation, or activity.”
Ashley also highlights the differences between student life and athletics which both play a large role in U.S. college culture.
St. Mary’s hosts weekly events for the students, “There are no classes on Wednesday because that is the sports day…all the St. Mary’s teams play on Wednesdays…clubs also tend to meet on Wednesdays.”
Having a dedicated day for campus activities “allows everyone the time to join clubs and sports and get involved.”
Ashley emphasized how college sports in England are not held to the same standards as in the U.S. and at Neumann.
“At St. Mary’s, I also get the opportunity to play ‘mixed competitive league.’ This means that boys and girls on the same team playing with female lacrosse sticks and different rules.”
“I cannot speak highly enough about my experience studying abroad. After this experience, I am the biggest advocate for studying abroad. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.” Ashley added, “It is going to be extremely difficult to leave.”
