Neumann SGA Is Redefining Student Leadership

Neumann University’s Student Government is working to change students’ opinions of campus leadership by promoting more student involvement, enhancing communication, and making meetings more open.

SGA is nearly full this fall, making it one of the biggest student government boards currently. The group’s main goal is to strengthen relationships between students and campus administration so that students have more access to university resources and decision-makers.

SGA President Alyssa Papasodero has been involved with the organization for about a year, serving previously as a senator and secretary before stepping into the top leadership role.

While student government struggles with engagement across the globe, Papasodero believes that time, scheduling, and students’ fear of the commitment tend to be the main causes of the issue at Neumann.

“People think it’s a big undertaking, but in reality, it’s really not because we all work well together,” she said.  “A lot of students commute or work, so we’ve created an environment where you can do what’s best for you.”

The SGA this year has placed a strong emphasis on transparency and visibility. Students are encouraged to voice opinions at open meetings, and university officials like the president and provost are invited to attend.

Additionally, SGA offers walk-in hours and an anonymous comment system for students who might be hesitant to speak in front of others.

“We’re trying to create a space where anybody can talk about anything,” she said. “If concerns aren’t said, then there’s nothing we can do to fix them.”
