Neumann Skates Forward on Ed Snider Hockey Arena

In October of 2023, Neumann University was given its biggest gift to date.

Snider Hockey pledged $15 million for a new hockey arena—on the condition that Neumann could match it with its own $15 million.

Two years have passed.

So, where does the project stand?

While no exact number of funds can be shared, Carrie Snyder, Vice President for University Advancement, says, “We are still in process, and Snider and Neumann are both committed to the project to see it through to completion.”

Fundraising efforts have included a variety of approaches. Neumann has kept close contact with Snider Hockey, including the CEO and chairman Scott Tharp, met with individual donors, and even raised funds through the announcement press release.

The project itself has also evolved—most notably in its layout.

Originally, the building’s entrance was planned to face Aston Mills Road.

Now, it opens onto the turf field and Mirenda Center.

Behind the turf field’s bleachers and in front of the hockey arena will be a courtyard with an outdoor basketball court, a space that could also host food trucks regularly.

Inside, the first floor will feature a large lobby and two ice rinks, with locker rooms down the spine in between.

Upstairs, coaches’ offices, multipurpose and training rooms, concessions, and the home of Snider Hockey’s youth after-school programs will fill the space.

“It really is more than a hockey rink,” said Snyder. Rather than just a place to skate or hang out, it opens the door to new opportunities and the chance to make a real difference.

Snider Hockey will bring in 300 local youth from underprivileged areas to learn how to skate.

“Our students will have the opportunity to be mentors, gain internships, and help run the rink—there’ll be job opportunities and new ways to build community,” said Snyder.

This isn’t just a special gift for the hockey teams.

It’s a new gathering space for the Neumann community—almost like a second Mirenda Center.

Of course, it will still benefit the varsity and club hockey teams immensely.

“A new rink would completely elevate our hockey programs,” said women’s ice hockey coach Gina McLaughlin. “Day-to-day, it would mean better accessibility for our athletes, more consistent ice availability, and an enhanced environment for player development. It would also serve as a powerful recruiting tool and a hub for campus and community engagement.”

And while the days of renting IceWorks may be limited, the facility could still play a role in local programs.

With two arenas in close proximity, there will be more ice than ever, making Aston a prime location for youth tournaments.

“We also see the hockey rink as a revenue generator so that it can run itself from a financial standpoint,” added Snyder. The self-sustaining ability of the rink will help ensure it remains a landmark on campus for years to come.

With its features, opportunities, and community impact, this arena will surely take the Neumann campus to the next level.

“The addition of an ice arena on campus will be a game-changer for Neumann University and Neumann Athletics by providing a facility that will set us apart from most Division III institutions in the country,” said Athletic Director John Krimmel.

With each passing day, the plans for the rink move closer to reality, promising opportunities for students, athletes, and the community alike.

In fact, you might not have to wait long for more details.

“I can’t say too much for now. Things will be coming out at some point over the next 2–4 weeks,” said Snyder.
